20 Years of Knitting

This week, 20 years ago, I learned to knit. I was days away from giving birth to my first child, had just participated in the great Texodus evacuation of our area due to Hurricane Rita, and I was miserable. My aunt saw a “Learn to Knit Kit” at Target complete with yarn, needles, and DVD instructions and she bought it for me in the hope that it would prove a distraction from my bloated, pregnant suffering. 😅
My sister, Noemi, and I picked up those needles and we haven’t put them down since! Knitting has become such a huge part of our lives and I think it’s safe to say that we are in love with yarn. 🥰
Since learning to knit, I have made countless items of clothing for my children when they were babies, little blankets as baby shower gifts for friends, large blankets for family for Christmas. I have made socks, hats, shawls, and scarves a plenty! I knit pretty much every day and have found yarn to be endlessly inspiring. We've taught friends and family how to knit and watched them catch the excitement of those little loops of possibility. Knitting has been a comfort in hard times, and a joy in the ordinary days of life.
Recently, we took a girls trip to McKinney, Texas where we first learned to knit and bought a few skeins of yarn to celebrate at McKinney Knittery. We also stopped by Ewe 2 Yarn in Waxahachie (twice!) to grab their beautiful yarn dyed in-house. Yarn shops are the happiest places brimming with potential and creativity. You can almost hear the gears turning in the heads of customers who are planning out their next projects and deciding on colors.
Color and texture are my favorite qualities about yarn. I think this is reflected in my pattern designs where they are highlighted. You can completely change the look of a pattern by swapping out colors or textures. The pattern is a framework for creativity, an invitation to see what can happen.

Thank you for being part of my knitting journey. I’d love to hear about how you learned to knit as well! You can send me a message or leave a comment. I hope that you are inspired to pick up your needles today and knit. ~Ester
